The Stravinsky Rite of Spring Scandal to be Celebrated with Centennial Eggs

By MIKA POHJOLA

Blue Music Group announced today of the founding of a committee which will plan an authentic replicate of the 1913 eggs used in the premiere performance of Igor Stravinsky's Rite of Spring. The eggs will be collector's item merchandise and available in Paris during the 2013 centennial celebration, aimed at arts hungry Parisians. The series will be manufactured according to traditional 1913 breeding.

The notorious ballet premiere was reviewed by Le Figaro's music critic Alfred Capus on June 7, 1913: "Bluffing the idle rich of Paris through appeals to their snobbery is a delightfully simple matter. The only condition precedent thereto is that they be gorged with publicity." It is this review which stands for the basic guidelines when preparing a re-run of the scandal. "As Parisians have hardly changed in 100 years – how could they ever? – it will be easy to furnish them with the same crap Capus referred to in his invaluable account," says Alessandro Conti, spokesperson for the "Repeat the Scandal" committee. "The eggs are an essential part of it, but the price will be much higher, and that will make Parisians believe they are more bourgeois in their arts consumption than ever." Capus continues: "Impress them with cabalistic formulae. They have not the slightest notion of music, literature, painting, and dancing; still, they have heretofore seen under these names only a rude imitation of the real thing. Finally, assure, them that they are about to see real dancing and hear real music."

The newly formed committee believes its role will be important in order to diminish Igor Stravinsky's reputation to the 1913 level. This action will further enhance the authenticity of the centennial remembrances. "Otherwise, we may not break even, Parisians really demand the real thing," Conti assures. The committee will release more news about the development of the "Repeat the Scandal" project as it unfolds.
